Blue Mountain,
Miss. – Blue Mountain Christian University women's soccer battled Williams Baptist University Saturday afternoon at The Summit, keeping the Eagles within reach for much of the match before Williams Baptist pulled away late for a 5-0 victory.
The Toppers' defense faced pressure throughout the opening half, but goalkeeper
Kiana Gordon and the BMCU back line repeatedly turned away opportunities to keep the match scoreless for nearly 40 minutes.
Williams Baptist eventually broke through in the 40th minute when Yajaira Alvarado found the back of the net for the opening goal.
Gordon recorded seven saves in the first half to help send the Toppers into the break facing just a 1-0 deficit.
BMCU continued to battle after halftime and kept Williams Baptist off the board for nearly the first 20 minutes of the second half.
The Eagles extended their advantage in the 65th minute when Alvarado scored her second goal of the afternoon off an assist from Chloe Cureton.
Alvarado completed the hat trick in the 75th minute before Williams Baptist added two goals over the final 11 minutes.
Lucia Alvarez scored in the 80th minute, and Valentina Marin closed the scoring in the 88th minute off an assist from Megan Sharp.
Gordon continued to make stops throughout the second half, adding eight more saves to finish the afternoon with 15 saves in 90 minutes in goal for the Toppers.
Offensively, Blue Mountain Christian generated all four of its shots in the second half.
Nayelli Aguayo led the Toppers with two attempts, while Daniela Nieto and
Jaelyn Cox each added one.
Nieto recorded BMCU's lone shot on goal.
The Toppers will look to regroup and build off the opportunities they created in the second half as they continue their season.
