Blue Mountain, Miss.- Blue Mountain Christian University men's soccer battled Williams Baptist University in a tightly contested match Saturday afternoon at The Summit, with the Eagles using a second-half penalty kick and a late goal to come away with a 2-0 victory.
Neither side could find a breakthrough during the opening 45 minutes as the Toppers and Eagles entered halftime locked in a scoreless draw.
BMCU came out of the break on the attack and created several opportunities in the second half. After recording three shots in the opening period, the Toppers generated 14 attempts over the final 45 minutes.
Williams Baptist broke the scoreless tie in the 55th minute when Adriano Pelloni converted a penalty kick to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
The Toppers continued to push for an equalizer following the goal, putting six shots on target during the second half.
Davi Rainato provided a spark off the bench for BMCU, recording four shots in 40 minutes of action and placing all four on goal.
Pedro Pina and
Guilherme Aguiar also put attempts on target for the Toppers.
BMCU continued searching for the tying goal into the closing minutes before Williams Baptist added its second in the 88th minute on a goal from Alberto Ruiz.
The Toppers finished the afternoon with 17 shots, including seven on goal, while holding a 14-8 advantage in second-half attempts.
Luan Nascimento played all 90 minutes in goal for BMCU and finished with five saves.
