Cuthbert, Ga.- Blue Mountain Christian opened SSAC play on the right foot Thursday afternoon, using goals from
Alfonso Vasquez and
Nicholas Vieira to earn a 2-1 road victory over Andrew College.
The win moved the Toppers to 3-1-1 overall and 1-0 in SSAC play.
BMCU controlled much of the attacking pressure throughout the afternoon, outshooting Andrew 17-6 while putting eight attempts on frame.
The Toppers also limited the Tigers to just two shots on goal.
After creating several chances during the opening stages, Blue Mountain Christian found its breakthrough in the 36th minute.
Erick Braga helped set up Vasquez, who found the back of the net at the 35:17 mark for his first goal of the season, putting the Toppers ahead 1-0.
BMCU carried the one-goal advantage into halftime after holding Andrew to three shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The Toppers continued to apply pressure early in the second half.
Davi Vieira put an attempt on goal in the 51st minute before
Nicholas Vieira forced another save from Andrew goalkeeper Teagan Paulo in the 60th minute.
Andrew eventually found the equalizer at 61:37 when Manuel Lopez scored off an assist from Paul Coaxum to even the match at 1-1.
The Toppers didn't take long to respond.
Just over seven minutes later,
Mateus Furio connected with
Nicholas Vieira, who finished the opportunity at 68:43 to put BMCU back in front 2-1.
The goal was Vieira's thirdt of the season and ultimately stood as the game-winner.
From there, the BMCU defense protected the advantage.
Andrew managed two late corner kicks but was unable to put another shot on goal as the Toppers closed out their first conference victory of the season.
Vasquez and
Nicholas Vieira each finished with two shots on goal and a goal, while Braga and Furio each recorded an assist.
Dipanda Silva Jr. added two shots on goal as BMCU finished with 17 total attempts and eight on target.
Blue Mountain Christian improves to 3-1-1 overall and begins its SSAC schedule at 1-0.
