Columbia, Ky. – Blue Mountain Christian Volleyball faced a pair of strong opponents Saturday at Biggers Sports Center, falling to receiving-votes Lindsey Wilson in four sets before closing the day against No. 10 Cumberlands.
The Volley Toppers (4-6) showed fight throughout the doubleheader, highlighted by a dominant third-set response against Lindsey Wilson and improved offensive efficiency later in the day against nationally ranked Cumberlands.
Lindsey Wilson 3, Blue Mountain Christian 1
BMCU opened the day against Lindsey Wilson, falling 25-18, 25-8, 13-25, 25-18.
After dropping the opening two sets, the Volley Toppers responded with their best set of the match in the third.
BMCU recorded 10 kills while hitting .222 in the frame and held Lindsey Wilson to a .067 hitting percentage.
The Toppers used the strong response to run away with a 25-13 victory and force a fourth set.
Lindsey Wilson answered in the fourth, taking the set 25-18 to close out the match.
Marissa Gerleman led the BMCU attack with eight kills, while
Salice Speed added seven and
Valeria Velez finished with five.
The Volley Toppers were effective from the service line, recording 12 aces compared to seven for Lindsey Wilson.
Abbi Williams, Speed and
Sydney Tague each collected three aces.
Williams and Velez anchored the defensive effort with 16 digs apiece.
Olivia Lewis led BMCU at the net with five total blocks, while
Mattie Hopper added three.
Olivia Domino dished out 14 assists, with Tague adding 12.
No. 10 Cumberlands 3, Blue Mountain Christian 0
BMCU closed out the doubleheader against No. 10 Cumberlands, falling 25-16, 25-20, 25-19.
The Volley Toppers improved offensively throughout the match.
BMCU also held advantages from the service line and at the net, finishing with four aces compared to two for Cumberlands while recording seven total blocks to the Patriots' four.
Speed led the Toppers offensively with nine kills and added 10 digs. Gerleman followed with six kills while hitting .222.
Lewis turned in an efficient performance with five kills on nine attacks and a .444 hitting percentage. Hopper added four kills while helping lead BMCU's presence at the net with five total blocks. Gerleman added four blocks.
Williams led the back row with 11 digs, followed by Speed with 10 and Velez with eight.
Tague dished out a team-high 11 assists, while Domino added nine.
The Volley Toppers will play their first home match against Freed-Hardeman on Tuesday.
