The Blue Mountain Christian University softball team opened play in the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round on Monday afternoon in Oklahoma City, battling the No. 2 seeded Grand View University Vikings in a tightly contested matchup before falling 2-1 on a walk-off single in the seventh inning.
Making their first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Opening Round, the Toppers showed poise and competitiveness throughout the afternoon against one of the top teams in the bracket.
BMCU struck first in the top of the third inning after
Laklyn Nichols reached base and later came around to score on an RBI single from
Mikaylah Fuqua.
The RBI knock gave the Toppers a 1-0 lead and set the tone for a defensive battle throughout much of the game.
Inside the circle,
Neely Cooper delivered another strong postseason performance for the Toppers. The right-hander worked 6.1 innings while allowing just one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts.
Grand View broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning, capitalizing on late opportunities to tie the game before recording the walk-off RBI single moments later.
Offensively, the Toppers collected five hits in the contest.

Despite the result, the Toppers continued to show the grit and resilience that has defined their historic season while competing on the national stage for the first time in program history.
Blue Mountain Christian will continue play in the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round on Tuesday at 1:00 PM against No. 5 seed Williams Baptist University in an elimination matchup from Oklahoma City.
