Game Recap: Softball |

Historic season comes to a close for Toppers in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City, OK- It was a day filled with emotion, excitement, and pride for the Blue Mountain Christian University softball team on Tuesday in Oklahoma City as the Toppers earned their first-ever NAIA National Opening Round victory before later battling the top-seeded Oklahoma City University Stars in a tightly contested pitcher's duel to conclude the historic 2026 season.
If there was one word that defined BMCU softball throughout the year, it was the same word repeated around the program all season long — historic.
From the opening series of the season, there was a noticeable talent and chemistry surrounding "Team 16."
That connection continued to grow throughout the spring as the Toppers rewrote the record books, setting numerous school records while also establishing a BMCU athletic department record for most wins in a single season.
The day began with history as the Toppers defeated Williams Baptist University 4-3 in eight innings to secure the program's first-ever NAIA National Opening Round victory.
BMCU wasted little time getting on the board in the opening inning.
Aspen Teague delivered an RBI single to score Anna Harrison before Kelsey Camp added a sacrifice fly later in the frame to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Toppers added another run in the third inning after an error allowed Teague to score and push the lead to 3-0.
Williams Baptist battled back throughout the middle innings, tying the game in the sixth to force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Toppers found their breakthrough moment.
Neely Barrier came around to score after Laklyn Nichols delivered the go-ahead RBI single to left field, giving Blue Mountain Christian a 4-3 advantage.
Inside the circle, Madison Montgomery kept the Toppers in control throughout much of the afternoon, tossing six innings with three strikeouts.
Neely Cooper entered in relief and shut the door over the final two innings, striking out three batters while not allowing a hit to earn the win.
Offensively, the Toppers totaled 12 hits in the victory. Teague led the way with a three-hit performance and two runs scored, while Vaye Savage and Bre Ramsey each collected two hits.
Later in the evening, the Toppers returned to the field to face host and No. 1 seed in the Opening Round Oklahoma City University.
In another tightly played contest, BMCU battled the nationally ranked Stars until the final out before falling 1-0.
The lone run of the game came in the fourth inning on an unearned RBI single by Oklahoma City.
Cooper delivered another outstanding postseason performance inside the circle for the Toppers, going the distance while allowing just one unearned run on seven hits with five strikeouts.
The Toppers were limited to one hit offensively, which came from Ramsey, while Mikaylah Fuqua and Ramsey each worked walks during the contest.
The loss brought an end to one of the most accomplished seasons in Blue Mountain Christian athletics history.
The Toppers finished the year with a 39-17-1 overall record, earned the program's first trip to the NAIA National Opening Round, secured the program's first national postseason victory, and established new standards across the record books.
BMCU also leaned heavily throughout the season on the leadership and example set by its senior class, a group that helped elevate the standard of Topper softball and laid a foundation for the future of the program.
