Mount Vernon, Ga.- The Blue Mountain Christian Toppers opened their three-game SSAC series on Friday in Mount Vernon, Georgia, facing the Brewton-Parker Christian University Barons in a doubleheader.
Despite competitive stretches throughout the day, the Toppers came up short in both contests as BPCU claimed a 7–1 win in game one and a 17–8 decision in game two.
In the opening game, Brewton-Parker used a strong first inning to establish early momentum. The Barons pushed across four runs in the bottom of the first and later added three more on a three-run home run in the fifth inning to extend their lead.
Blue Mountain Christian broke through in the sixth when
Jacob Bryant delivered a solo home run to put the Toppers on the board.
While the Toppers continued to compete defensively and, on the mound, the early surge by the Barons proved difficult to overcome as BPCU secured the 7–1 victory.
Game two saw the Toppers strike first in the opening inning when
Ross Polizzi lifted a sacrifice fly to score
Jake Meilstrup and give Blue Mountain Christian an early 1–0 lead.
Brewton-Parker answered quickly, building an 8–1 advantage through the first three innings.
The Toppers showed resilience midway through the game, cutting into the deficit in the fourth inning when
Yaidel Perez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and two more runs crossed on a BPCU fielding error to make it 8–4.
Blue Mountain Christian continued to chip away as
Jacob Bryant launched a solo home run in the seventh inning and Perez added another solo shot in the eighth.
The Toppers briefly pulled within a run after a late rally highlighted by an RBI double from Polizzi that brought the score to 9–8.
However, Brewton-Parker responded with a decisive eight-run bottom of the eighth inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Fred Diaz, to pull away for the 17–8 final.
Offensively, Bryant provided a bright spot for the Toppers with home runs in both games of the doubleheader, while Perez added a home run and RBI in the second game.
Polizzi contributed key run production as well, recording an RBI sacrifice fly and an RBI double during the day.
The Toppers will look to regroup as the series concludes Saturday in Mount Vernon with the final game of the three-game SSAC set against the BPCU Barons.
