Mobile, Ala.- The Blue Mountain Christian Toppers fought back from an early deficit and briefly took the lead Saturday afternoon, but Mobile used a ninth-inning rally to secure a 6-5 walk-off victory in the final game of the SSAC series.
Mobile struck first with a run in the third inning and added two more in the fifth to build a 3-0 lead.
BMCU answered in the sixth when
Jake Meilstrup delivered a clutch two-RBI single to score
Yaidel Perez and
Ethan Hirons, cutting the deficit to one.
The Toppers grabbed momentum in the seventh inning with a three-run frame. Perez came through with a two-RBI single to score
Cody Presley and
Ross Polizzi, giving Blue Mountain Christian a 4-3 lead.
Trace Roy followed with an RBI single to bring home Perez and extend the BMCU lead to 5-3.
Mobile responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to one before tying the game in the eighth.
In the ninth, the Rams capitalized on a defensive miscue to score the winning run and complete the walk-off.
Offensively, the Toppers collected 12 hits in the contest. Roy led BMCU with a strong performance, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI.
Meilstrup finished 1-for-5 with two RBIs, while Perez went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Gavin Foley added two hits, while Polizzi, Presley, Bryant, and
Reise Thomas each recorded a hit.
On the mound,
Benji Webb gave the Toppers a solid start, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits while striking out four.
Christian Manness worked in relief, allowing one run while striking out one.
Morris threw the final inning and was charged with the loss.
Despite the tough finish, BMCU showed resilience after falling behind early and putting themselves in position to win late. The Toppers will look to regroup as they continue conference play in their upcoming games.
