Walnut Ridge, Ark.- On a Thursday afternoon in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, the Blue Mountain Christian baseball team delivered a balanced and timely offensive attack to earn an 8–2 victory over Williams Baptist.
After jumping out to an early lead and withstanding a brief rally by the home team, the Toppers steadily built momentum and never relinquished control of the contest.
Blue Mountain Christian struck first in the opening inning when
Cody Presley belted a two-run homer to left, bringing in teammate
Jake Meilstrup and putting the Toppers ahead 2–0. That early blow set the tone for a day in which Blue Mountain Christian's lineup would consistently find ways to put runs on the board.
Williams Baptist responded in the third inning, tying the game at two apiece when Lawson Aaron's two-run single brought home Will Riley and Gavin Mink.
The answer, however, proved short-lived. Blue Mountain Christian reclaimed the lead in the fourth courtesy of an RBI single by
Gates Gerhart, followed shortly by an RBI bases-loaded hit by
Reise Thomas that brought home Gerhart and put the Toppers back in front for good.
From that point forward, Blue Mountain Christian's offense continued to apply pressure.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of
Trace Roy in the fifth padded the lead to 5–2, and in the sixth inning Roy delivered once again with a two-run single that extended the advantage to 7–2.
Later in the frame, an error by the Williams Baptist defense allowed Roy to score again and give the Toppers an 8–2 cushion.
Offensively, the Toppers showcased balanced production throughout their lineup.
Presley finished with two hits and drove in two runs, and Roy paced the offense with three RBI while also contributing on the basepaths.
Jarret Morris added multiple hits and helped ignite rallies with his timely contact.
On the mound, Blue Mountain Christian ace
Benji Webb delivered a strong performance, going the distance and allowing just two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Webb's composure kept Williams Baptist from mounting a sustained comeback and allowed the Toppers' offense to operate with confidence.
In the end, it was a complete performance by Blue Mountain Christian — timely hitting, steady defense, and strong pitching — that carried them to an 8–2 road victory and underscored the depth and balance of this year's roster.
Game two of the doubleheader has been suspended and will start tomorrow morning in the 8
th inning..
