Milligan, Tenn.- BMCU Volleyball started the 2025 season strong, with two wins over Union Commonwealth University and Milligan University.
Match 1
The Volley Toppers opened their season in strong fashion, matching up against the Union Commonwealth Bulldogs and showing a blend of experience and fresh talent.
Sophomore
Marissa Gerleman powered the offense from the outside, recording a team-high seven kills. Fellow sophomore
Salice Speed, one of BMCU's rising stars, added six kills to the attack.
At the setter position,
Reanna Brown orchestrated the offense with precision, finishing with nine assists. On the defensive end, senior captain
Kora Wilson anchored the back row, tallying 12 digs, five assists, and even contributing a kill from her libero spot.
The Toppers outplayed the Bulldogs in every category, making it clear that while there may be new faces on the roster, the team's standard of excellence remains intact. It was a terrific start to the season—and momentum they carried straight into their second match against Milligan University.
Match 2
The BMCU attack was explosive in match two, combining for 40 team kills. The Buffaloes, a strong program with a 24-8 record in 2024, had no answer for the Volley Toppers' relentless offense.
Once again, Gerleman led the charge with 12 kills, followed closely by highly touted transfer
Rachel Stegall, who tallied 10 kills. Speed continued her steady play with eight kills of her own.
An important key to the Toppers' success was Brown, who commanded the offense from her setter position and finished with 28 assists. On the defensive side, Wilson anchored the back row with 19 digs, showcasing her consistency and grit.
With the sweep, the Volley Toppers claim day one of the Milligan Mountain Madness Tournament and will look to carry their hot start into day two tomorrow.
