laski, Tenn.- BMCU took down the Firehawks in game one of the SSAC weekend series on Thursday afternoon, 7-3.
Benji Webb started on the mound for the Toppers and looked impressive in his five and two-thirds innings.
Webb allowed just three runs on five hits and struck out five batters as well.
Chris Smith had a RBI walk with bases loaded in the top of the first inning to start the game.
UT-Southern would answer in the bottom of the second, with a two-run home run by Perkins.
Carson Gault helped the Toppers reclaim the lead in the fourth inning, with a two-run bomb of his own that scored
Austin Garrison as well.
Jacob Bryant added a single in the same inning that allowed Ty Roberson to score on an error.
Perkins, for the Firehawks, continued his solid day at the plate with a solo shot home run in the bottom of the fourth, to make it a 4-3 lead for the Toppers.
Smith got his second RBI of the game in the sixth inning, hitting a single up the middle that drove in
Ross Polizzi.
SSAC pitcher of the week, Cam Gordon, entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning in relief of Webb and silenced the bats of the Firehawks with three strikeouts.
BMCU added some insurance runs in the top of the seventh, with Bryant hitting a two RBI single up the middle.
Gordon continued his dominant pitching on the mound that sealed a conference and cemented the Toppers spot in the SSAC Baseball Championship Tournament next week.
Thursday was scheduled to be a double header against Ut-Southern, but game two was postponed to tomorrow at 1 pm due to weather.
