New Orleans, LA- The Toppers went on a hitting spree on Thursday Night against No. 11 Loyola, leading to a decisive win.
Cameron Gordon started on the mound and looked strong in his seven innings of work. He gave up five runs on six hits and allowed four walks.
Carson Gault was an early catalyst for the Toppers at the plate with an RBI single in the second inning and reaching first on an error in the fourth inning to score a run.
The Wolf Pack put up four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead on a double, catcher's indifference, and fielder's choice.
Josaih Rivera scored a runner on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning and on the same play, an error was made by Loyola's second baseman.
Hayden Redding and
Yaidel Perez ended up scoring on the play.
Going into the top of the seventh inning, Loyola had the lead 5-4 but BMCU found resilience.
Redding led off the inning by hitting a solo shot to tie the ball game.
Jacob Bryant scored on a wild pitch and then another error by the Wolf Pack allowed the Toppers to grab an 8-6 lead.
In the eighth and ninth inning, clutch relief pitching by
Cole Giordano and
Michael Lorenz helped solidify the Toppers victory.
Giordano allowed one hit in his inning of work but worked out of it.
Lorenz struck out two batter to earn his first save on the year.
The Toppers will play Loyola for games two and three tomorrow starting at noon.
