BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Blue Mountain Christian and Freed-Hardeman matched up here Tuesday for a midweek non-conference battle, with the Toppers edging the Lions 8-7.
The Toppers got things going in the third, as Chris Smith singled in a run and Will Crawford later scored.
The Lions answered in the fourth with a two-run homer from Dawson Massengale and an RBI single from Jordan Carter.
Blue Mountain regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, as Smith singled to center to drive in two, Josiah Rivera singled in a run and Ty Roberson roped an RBI single off the right field wall.
In the top of the fifth, Freed would get a solo homer from Brooks Jones and a two-run single from Massengale to make it 6-6.
Roberson would give the Toppers the lead again in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to center.
The Lions would tie it again in the seventh on an infield RBI single from Massengale.
BMCU would once again retake the lead in the bottom of the seventh, as Jacob Bryant drilled an RBI single that would be the difference in the game.
Bryant finished with three hits, while Smith had two hits and three RBI.  Rivera and Roberson chipped in two hits apiece in the win, while Hayden Redding stole two more bases.
Ammon Murphy (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Drew Newman, as he tossed 3.1 innings, allowed a run, scattered three hits and struck out two.
Rey Castaneda came on for the save, tossing 1.2 innings of no-hit ball with two Ks.
BMCU (17-11, 9-6 SSAC) returns to SSAC play Friday and Saturday against Abraham-Baldwin in Tifton, Ga.
