Softball Toppers upset No. 14 Crusaders in Game 1, split two-game series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – GAME 1 – Blue Mountain Christian and No. 14 William Carey squared off for an early season SSAC doubleheader showdown here Friday, with the Toppers getting a huge upset 2-1 in the opener.
BMCU righty Madison Montgomery (5-1) was stellar in the circle, tossing a three-hitter against the Carey powerhouse.
Montgomery cruised to the win, allowing the lone run with a strikeout on 114 pitches while stranding seven runners.
The Crusaders would break the ice in the first inning, getting a fielder's choice run on a groundout to short.
Blue Mountain would answer in the top of the third with an RBI single down the left field line by Iris Farve that scored Skylar Lee to tie it at 1-1.
The Toppers would take the lead in the fifth, as Farve came through again with an RBI double to right center to score Mallory Jo Mitchell, making it 2-1 Blue Mountain and all the Toppers and starter Montgomery would need.
Farve led the way at the plate with two hits including a double and a pair of RBI, while Maryn Macri chipped in two hits and Lee stole a base.

GAME 2
Carey would turn it around in the nightcap, taking the second game by a score of 6-0 behind a three-hitter from Reanna Nieman.
The Crusaders would get three runs in the bottom of the third with two coming unearned and a run scoring single.
Carey would make it 4-0 in the fifth when they would get a sac-fly and follow it up with a pair of runs in the sixth to split the day.
Skylar Lee, Iris Farve and Audrey Hillis had the Toppers three hits on the game.
Neely Cooper suffered the loss in the circle for the Toppers, tossing five innings, giving up just two earned runs and scattering seven hits with a K.
BMCU (8-8, 1-3 SSAC) heads to No. 20 Mobile (Ala.) Saturday for an SSAC doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m. CT.
