COCHRAN, Ga. – Blue Mountain Christian Baseball couldn't salvage the opening SSAC series Saturday against Middle Georgia State, losing 5-4 in a game that came down to the final inning.
The ninth inning turned disastrous for the Toppers, as the Knights would get four runs to walk it off on an RBI single from Jose Vargas with two outs.
After dropping the Friday doubleheader, the Toppers got a dominate performance on the mound from lefty
Max Bates in Game 3.
Bates tossed 7.1 innings, giving up a run while scattering eight hits with a K, not earning a decision.
MGA would do its damage in the ninth, as BMCU reliever
Austin Garrison couldn't nail it down. The Knights would get two RBI singles and score on two Topper errors to take the game.
Blue Mountain scored in the first on a sac-fly from
Josiah Rivera that scored
Hayden Redding.
Two more crossed the plate for the Toppers in the third, as
Jacob Bryant scored Ty Roberson on a sac-fly and Redding came around later to score on a wild pitch, giving BMCU a 3-0 lead.
Will Crawford provided some fireworks in the seventh for BMCU, blasting a solo shot to left to give the Toppers a 4-0 lead. It was Crawford's third of the young season.
The Knights first run against Bates came in the eighth, as Chaz Salter singled in a run.
Roberson led the way with three hits for BMCU, followed by Redding with two hits, two runs scored and three stolen bases.
BMCU (6-7, 0-3 SSAC) returns to action Tuesday in Blue Mountain in non-conference action against Rust College (Miss.) at 2 and 4 p.m. CT.
