Toppers Come Out Swinging on Opening Day

Millington, Tenn. – The bats of the BMCU baseball Toppers came alive early to start the mark of the 2025 season in an opening day sweep versus the William Woods Owls.
The Toppers have an experienced lineup returning for this new season and they did not disappoint in these two victories.
The starting pitcher in game one for the Toppers was a transfer from Holmes Community College, Drew Newman.
In the top of first inning, the Owls were able to scratch a run on the board, but Newman was able to work his way out of it.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Toppers made their presence known loudly with a three-run bomb by Will Crawford. BMCU scored four runs in just the first inning alone.
From that point, it seemed as if it would be a Blue Mountain climb for the Owls to stay in the ball game.
In the top of the third inning, William Woods was able to see some production offensively. They produced two runs to make it a five to three ball game going into the bottom of the inning.
That was until an RBI double was hit by Austin Garrison which scored Jacob Mobley from third base.
A transfer from Lane College, Yaidel Perez, got his first RBI as a Topper, right after Garrison, which scored Crawford.
The scoring did not stop there as the next batter, Tyrese Roberson, hit his first homerun of the season to make the lead, ten to three, by the end of the third inning.
In the fourth inning, Ammon Murphy came in to relieve Newman.
The Owls were able to get two runs off Murphy in the fourth inning, but he found his groove to send the Toppers hitting again.
Garrison decided to add two extra insurance runs for the Toppers with a homerun that flew off the bat in the fourth inning.
Williams Woods kept battling to get to eight runs in the ball game by the top of the seventh inning, but BMCU created a deficit too much to overcome. Giving BMCU their first win of the much-anticipated season.
In Game two, the transfer from Hinds Community College, Benji Webb, started on the mound for the Toppers.
Webb's only blemish on the night was the first batter he faced, Jackson Kirn, who hit a leadoff homerun to start the game.
From that point on, Webb, settled in and tossed a complete game on seventy pitches with ten strikeouts.
In the bottom of the first, BMCU quickly answered the Owls with two runs from a SAC fly by Chris Smith and an RBI single by Crawford.
The second inning saw Hayden Redding get an RBI single to start his second year at BMCU.
Smith hit an RBI single up the middle to go along with the damage.
Crawford seemed to still be a magnet for the baseball as he drove in a run with a hit by pitch.
Garrison was playing as a man possessed as he was a triple shy of the cycle in game two. Hitting three for four with four RBI's just in game two.
By the end, game two was a nine to one dominant win for the Toppers to start the year off with a bang.
The diamond Toppers will be back in Millington, Tennessee for another doubleheader at 1:00pm tomorrow.
