BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – GAME 1 – Blue Mountain Christian and Stillman kicked off their three-game SSAC series here Friday afternoon, with the Toppers getting the upper hand with a 12-6 Victory.
After being down 1-0, the Toppers got on track in the bottom of third, as Peeko Townsend doubled to center to drive in a run and Smith knocked Townsend in immediately after with a single to right to give BMCU a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Will Crawford would notch an infield single for an RBI, giving BMCU a 3-1 lead. Crawford would set the BMCU season record for most hit-by-pitches in the game, being plunked twice and now being hit 21 times on the season.
Stillman tied it in the fifth on an RBI double by Kelvin Reese and a Topper error.
Blue Mountain took the lead back in the sixth when Crawford drove in another run with a ground out on the infield to score
Gavin Coles, making it 4-3.
Cole Giordano got the call for Game 1 on the bump for the Toppers, tossing a solid 5.2 innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits with five Ks, not earning a decision.
The Tigers would tie again in the seventh with a sac-fly from Samuel Fleming, making it 4-4.
Blue Mountain would get the wheel turning at the plate in the bottom of the seventh against Tiger reliever Matt Rivers, getting four RBI singles from
Austin Garrison, Coles, Crawford and
Carson Gault. A pair of runs would also score on Tiger errors in the inning, making it 11-4.
The Toppers added an insurance run in the eight on a sac-fly from
Hayden Redding to complete the win.
Coles, Crawford, Smith and Garrison all had two hits each for the Toppers, while
Jesse Hancock (4-0) picked up the win in relief tossing three innings, giving up two runs on three hits with four Ks. Crawford would also finish with three RBI.
The two teams will square off again Saturday in a doubleheader to decide the series with first pitch at 12 p.m. CT.
