Softball splits with Firehawks, postseason up next

PULASKI, Tenn. – GAME 1 – Blue Mountain Christian continued its hot hitting in Game 1 of the SSAC series against UT-Southern here Saturday, as they defeated the Firehawks 7-2.
The Toppers belted out 15 hits while Jacy Weaver dealt a gem in the circle, her second win over the Firehawks this season.
Weaver (8-10) dominated the UT-Southern offense, tossing a complete game, allowing no earned runs on seven hits with a K to lead her team to its fifth straight victory.
Iris Farve put the Toppers up in the first inning, driving a two-run single to left-center, and Jadyn Yarbro expanded the lead to 3-0 in the fourth with an RBI single to center.
The fourth continued with Evi Edwards belting a two-run single to right to make it 5-0 Toppers.
In the sixth, Haley McDaniel scored on a groundout by Skylar Lee and Mallory Jo Mitchell had an RBI single to put the Firehawks away.
McDaniel finished with three hits and three runs scored, while Lee, Edwards, Mitchell and Julianna Ingram all had two hits apiece for the Toppers in the win.
The victory gave the Toppers its 20th victory on the season.
 
GAME 2
UT-Southern would snap the Toppers five-game winning streak in the nightcap, winning 7-5 to close out the series.
Blue Mountain scored first in the opening frame with RBI singles by Evi Edwards, Iris Farve and Julianna Ingram, making it 3-0.
The Firehawks answered with two of their own in the bottom of the first.
Mallory Jo Mitchell would add a sac-fly to left to knock in a run for the Toppers, making it 4-2 in the top of the third.
The Firehawks would score three more in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run triple from Haley Barnes.
The Toppers would plate one more in the top of the sixth when Haley McDaniel would score on an error.  Blue Mountain would place the tying run on second in the top of the seventh but couldn't manage to score.
Bri Langley (4-8) suffered the loss in the circle for BMCU, tossing three innings, giving up seven runs on five hits with a K.  Madison Montgomery would also throw three innings in relief, not allowing a run, giving up two hits with two Ks.
Ingram finished with three hits for the Toppers, while McDaniel and Edwards had two hits each.
BMCU finishes the regular season 20-28 overall and 8-18 in the SSAC.  Next up is the SSAC Championship at Wilson-Morgan Softball Complex in Decatur, Ala. as the Toppers, the No. 9 seed, will match up against No. 8 seed Thomas University Thursday, May 2 at 10 a.m. CT. in the opening round.
