BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – GAME 1 – Blue Mountain Christian came up just short of upsetting No. 14 Mobile here to open the two-game SSAC series Friday, taking the Rams to eight innings, but falling 7-5.
The Topper would get to Mobile starter Emily Butts, tagging her for five runs on nine hits, including an RBI single by
Skylar Lee in the second inning and a three-run single from
Evi Edwards to right-center in the fourth.
Mobile would score four unanswered runs from the fifth through the eighth to finally put the Toppers away.
Blue Mountain's
Jacy Weaver (6-9) tossed a complete game, giving up six earned runs on nine hits with four Ks.
Jadyn Yarbro had a 4-for-4 game at the plate for the Toppers, including two runs scored. Lee had three hits for the Toppers also, while
Haley McDaniel and Edwards both had two hits each.
GAME 2
Game 2 saw Blue Mountain Christian melt a 6-0 deficit in the sixth inning, but Mobile would be able to fend them off to take a 7-4 victory.
Shante Beaulieu kicked off the rally in the sixth for BMCU with a double to deep left that scored
Haley McDaniel.
Three batters later,
Evi Edwards drilled a pitch over the left-centerfield fence for a three-run homer to pull Blue Mountain to within three runs.
Later in the inning,
Mallory Jo Mitchell would jump on a pitch and drive it to left center to score
Jaci White, closing the gap to two runs.
Mobile would get a run in the top of the seventh and bring on Avery Harrell in relief for the save in the bottom half.
Mitchell finished with three hits for Blue Mountain, while Edwards and Beaulieu both had two hits each. Edwards' homer was her fifth of the season.
BMCU (15-21, 7-13 SSAC) plays a doubleheader tomorrow in the SSAC Doubleheader of the Week against state foe William Carey at 1 and 3 p.m. CT in Blue Mountain. It's also Senior Day for the Toppers, which will begin at 12:30 p.m. CT.
