CORINTH, Miss. – GAME 1 - Blue Mountain Christian Softball swept a pair of SSAC games from UT-Southern Saturday, winning a defensive battle 2-1 in a walkoff in Game 1.
BMCU's
Jacy Weaver (3-6) was almost unhittable in the circle, as she would toss a complete game, allowing only one run on five hits with three Ks.
UT-Southern would get its lone run in the top of the fourth on a Kennedy Davis RBI single up the middle. Weaver would put the lock on the Firehawk defense from there on out.
The Toppers would tie it in the sixth when
Mallory Jo Mitchell burned the center fielder for a double to drive in pinch-runner
Maryn Macri.
In the final inning with two out, the Toppers
Julianna Ingram and
Sam Whitwell both singled, setting up a wild pitch by UTS pitcher Kennedy Davis. The ball scooted to the Firehawk dugout, allowing two runs to score, giving the Toppers their first SSAC victory on the season.
Mitchell finished with two hits to lead the Toppers, including the double.
Evi Edwards would also have a double for BMCU in the victory.
GAME 2
The Toppers broke out the hitting sticks in Game 2 but had to bring in Weaver for the save to get the 7-6 victory, sweeping the two-game set.
Blue Mountain would jump out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning, as
Julianna Ingram roped a two-run single, while
Sam Whitwell and
Lillie Johnson added RBI singles.
The Toppers would score two more in the third on RBI singles from
Tyra Billy and Johnson, making it 7-0.
BMCU starter
Madison Montgomery (3-3) cruised for five innings in the circle, eventually getting the win.
The Firehawks would gather three runs in the sixth and make it interesting in the top of the seventh, as they would get three runs against reliever
Bri Langley.
Coach
Matt Brunet would go back to Weaver with one out and a runner on third to try and close it for Blue Mountain, and that she did.
Weaver would get a strikeout and a ground ball to short to wrap the game in blue for the Toppers, also picking up her first save of the season.
Iris Farve finished with three hits for BMCU, while Skyla Lee had two hits. Johnson would also have two hits with two RBI and Ingram finished with two RBI.
