BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – GAME 1 – Blue Mountain Christian and (RV) Point met up for a doubleheader here Saturday to kick off the three-game SSAC series.
The Toppers would get an 11-7 victory in Game 1 behind another monster game from
Arderrius Townsend, better known as Peeko.
The reigning NAIA National Player of the Week looks to be on his way to another one, as he belted a three-run homer in the third inning today and would finish with six RBI in Game 1.
The Skyhawks would jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the Toppers had an answer each inning.
The Toppers plated three in the second, highlighted by an RBI single from Ty Roberson.
Townsend provided the offense in the third with his three-run shot, and then
Hayden Redding drove in a run with an RBI double in the fourth.
Blue Mountain put the game out of reach in the sixth with a bases-loaded walk by
Will Crawford and a sac-fly from Townsend that was so deep, it scored two runs on the play.
Matthew Koch (2-1) would come on in relief for BMCU to grab the victory, throwing two-innings of two-hit ball with three Ks.
Crawford and
Austin Garrison had two hits each for Blue Mountain, while Crawford and
Gavin Coles each scored twice.
GAME 2
Point would snap Blue Mountain's eight-game winning streak in the nightcap, defeating the Toppers 11-6.
Townsend would hit his nation-leading 17
th homer of the season in the eighth inning in the loss while collecting two hits and scoring twice.
Blue Mountain would score first, as Ty Roberson teed off for a solo home run in the third to give the Toppers a 1-0 lead.
BMCU's
Hunter Pierson and Point's Cameron Seiwert were locked in a pitching duel for four innings until the Skyhawks would get two in the fifth.
Pierson (0-1) would suffer the loss despite a strong outing, giving up only one earned runs and three hits across 4.1 innings of work.
Point would break it open in the sixth with a couple RBI singles and a bases-loaded walk.
Alex Marquard would seal it in the top of the ninth for Point, belting a three-run homer against BMCU's
Solomon Smith. Smith would have four Ks in r2.2 innings of relief work for the Toppers.
Roberson would finish with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored for BMCU, while Coles, Crawford and
Josiah Rivera all had two hits each also.
Seiwert would throw a complete game over nine innings for Point, giving up six runs on 12 hits with 11 Ks.
Townsend leads the nation in home runs and RBI at the midway point of the season, as he now has 17 homers and 57 RBI.
The two teams will square off tomorrow for Game 3 to decide the conference series, with first pitch set for 2:30 p.m. CT at Topper Field.
