HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – GAME 1 - Blue Mountain Christian's Arderrius "Peeko" Townsend set the school record for home runs Tuesday here against Rust College, hitting three bombs in the doubleheader.
Townsend would break former Topper Gardner Richey's home run mark of 12 from 2012 with his 13
th bomb of the season in the first inning.
Townsend's record-breaker came in Game 1, as he led the Toppers to an 18-14 victory in the opener the same day he was named the NAIA National Player of the Week.
It was a hit-fest for Blue Mountain, as the team belted out 21 hits with Townsend guiding the way with three hits, five RBI and three runs scored.
Hayden Redding supplied four hits and four runs, while
Carson Gault had three hits and four RBI.
Ty Roberson would have three hits with three runs, while
Josiah Rivera and
Austin Garrison had three hits each for the Toppers.
Roberson would swipe four bases for the Toppers, and Redding would steal three.
Rey Castaneda (2-0) grabbed the pitching win for Blue Mountain, tossing two-innings of one-hit ball with no runs and five Ks.
GAME 2
The home run train kept rolling in the second game, as Townsend and the Toppers swept the Bearcats in a 20-7 mauling.
Townsend belted home runs number 14 and 15 in the backend game, while going 3-for-4 with six RBI and four runs scored.
Carson Gault and
Bryland Skinner got in on the long ball fun, with each tagging a homer each in the victory for the Toppers. It was Gault's fifth homer of the season and Skinner's first.
Will Crawford banged out two hits with five RBI and four runs scored, while Ty Roberson had two hits and three runs scored.
Skinner finished with two hits, two RBI and three runs scored, and Gault had two hits with four RBI for the Toppers.
Peyton Smith (1-0) picked up the pitching win for Blue Mountain, tossing one inning of relief, giving up no earned runs on two hits with a K.
