Grand slams give BMCU first-ever sweep of Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. – Blue Mountain Christian mauled No. 18 Mobile Sunday afternoon 18-2, completing a sweep of the Rams for the first time in program history.
The two teams have history together since 2014, the year the Toppers joined the Southern States Athletic Conference.
An 11-run outbreak in the seventh for the Toppers turned what was supposed to be a 9-inning affair into a seven-inning game due to the mercy rule.
Arderrius Townsend would blast two more homers in the game, giving him four for the series and 12 on the season.
Townsend opened the scoring with a solo shot in the top of the second, and the Toppers followed up with four runs in the top of the fourth as Austin Garrison would belt a grand slam to left to put BMCU up 5-1.
Carson Gault provided and RBI single in the fifth, followed by an RBI double by Josiah Rivera to give BMCU a 7-1 lead.
The seventh got messy for the Rams as "Peeko" Townsend had two hits, including an RBI single and a grand slam.
Gavin Coles and Chris Smith would have RBI singles in the inning and the Toppers scored several on Mobile mishaps.
Matt Koch (1-1) was in postseason form on the bump for the Toppers, earning his first win of the season by tossing 5.1 inning of three-hit ball, giving up a run.
"Our guys are playing really well right now and this was a big series for us to get," BMCU head coach Taylor Clark said.  "Mobile is a perennially strong team always near the top of our conference, so it's tough just taking one game from them.  I'm proud of our guys and we hope we can carry this momentum over into the second half of the season."
When the dust settled, Blue Mountain had banged out 16 hits while holding the Rams to just four on the day.
Townsend finished with three hits, six RBI and four runs scored, while Smith had three hits.  Coles, Gault and Will Crawford would all have two hits each, and Garrison would have four RBI and Crawford would score three times.
Townsend's final line in the series was a .500 average including four homers, 11 RBI and 7 runs scored.
As a team, the Toppers are second in the nation in batting average at .360, while Townsend is second in the nation with 12 home runs, just one behind Concordia's Jaidan Quinn.
BMCU (16-5, 5-4 SSAC) now rides a five-game win streak into Tuesday when they will travel to Holly Spring, Miss. to take on Rust College in a doubleheader at 12 and 2 p.m. CT.
