HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Blue Mountain Christian Men couldn't pull out a victory in a huge comeback here Saturday against William Carey, as they fell 83-75 in overtime.
The Toppers looked a little sluggish in the first half, but would come alive in the second half, erasing a 26-point lead by the Crusaders.
The Toppers would go on a 25-3 run late in the second half, as Carey couldn't find a bucket for over four minutes.
Threes from
Manny Patrick and
Darien Newchurch would get the Toppers to withing five points at 64-59 with two minutes left in the game.
Blue Mountain continued to chip away under the two-minute mark as Patrick would get a steal and
Keevin Etienne scored off a miss from Patrick to make it 64-63 Carey.
With 33 seconds remaining, Patrick got another steal, and the Toppers would get a clean look at a three from
Vincent Douglas, but he couldn't get it to go down.
Patrick would foul out on the play, sending Carey's Kolby Moore to the free-throw line to make two.
Trae Jones would score two more buckets on drives down the stretch to send the game into overtime at 67-67.
In overtime, the Crusaders would get a pair of threes from Moore to seal the game, ruining the Blue Mountain comeback.
Jones would lead the Toppers with 17 points, Patrick had 15 and
Keevin Etienne recorded another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Newchurch would also finish with 12 points and
Vincent Douglas would chip in 11 points for Blue Mountain.
BMCU (11-15, 5-13 SSAC) is still hanging on to its postseason hopes, as they host Dalton State in Blue Mountain Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in SSAC action.
