Toppers and Barons split, series decided Saturday

MT. VERNON, Ga. – GAME 1 - Blue Mountain Christian kicked off its 2024 Southern States Athletic Conference schedule here today in a doubleheader against Brewton-Parker.
In Game 1, the Toppers would use the long ball to take the series opener by a score of 9-5.
Tyrese Roberson led off the game for Blue Mountain, drilling the second pitch he saw over the rightfield fence off BPC's Alex Muns.
Will Crawford would single in a run in the first to give the Toppers a 2-0 lead.
The Barons answered with two runs against BMCU starter Matthew Koch, but his team gave him more runs when Hayden Redding ripped an RBI single in the second and Austin Garrison belted a two-run homer in the fourth.
With the game tied at 5-5 in the fifth, Redding promptly put the Toppers back up with an RBI single, and Arderrius Townsend demolish his fourth homer of the season, a three-blast to give keep the Toppers ahead for good.
Townsend, Reddding, Crawford and Carson Gault all had two hits apiece for the Toppers, as they tagged Muns for five earned runs on seven hits.
Koch wouldn't get a decision, as he would throw 4.1 innings, giving up five runs on five hits with three Ks.
Jesse Hancock (2-0) would come on in relief to get the victory for BMCU, tossing 2.2 innings and giving up two hits.
 
GAME 2
Brewton-Parker would rebound and have a big eighth inning to down Blue Mountain in Game 2 of the conference series by a score of 12-6.
Carson Gault quickly erased a scoreless game in the second inning for the Toppers, as he bashed his second homer of the season, a three-run job against BPC's Ty Cook.
In the fourth, Peeko Townsend struck again with his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot against Cook to make it 4-2 Blue Mountain.
The Barons fired back in the bottom of the fourth when Brandon Lawrence belted a three-run homer against BMCU's Cameron Gordon to give his team a 5-4 lead.
Brewton would tack on some insurance in the sixth as Carson Kirby would drive in two with an RBI single off BMCU reliever Hunter Pierson to make it 7-4.
BMCU's Gavin Coles and Hayden Arant would get their team closer in the seventh, as Coles belted a solo homer, his first of the season, and Arant would rope an RBI single to make it 7-6 BPC.
The Barons would pile on in the eighth, scoring five runs, capped by a two-run homer from Michael Son to finish off the game.
Gordon took the loss for the Toppers, going 3.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits with four Ks.
Chris Smith finished with three hits for the Toppers, while Townsend and Gault both had two hits apiece.
BMCU moves to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the SSAC, as the two teams will play the third game Saturday at 11 a.m. CT in Mt. Vernon to decide the series.
