JACKSON, Miss. – Blue Mountain Christian Women opened the 2024-25 basketball season with a bang here Thursday night, knocking off Tougaloo 71-63.
Junior
Rebecca Walter would have her way with the Tougaloo defense, as she dropped a double-double, scoring 19 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
The Lady Toppers would jump out to a commanding lead in the first half, with Walter scoring seven straight baskets in the first quarter. She would have 15 points and seven boards at the break.
The Bulldogs worked their way back into it in the second half, going on a 6-0 run to open the third quarter.
Tougaloo would drop the deficit all the way to one, 54-53, in the fourth on a three from Maia Turner, but Blue Mountain would fire the guns with back-to-back threes from
Isabella Carlson, a bucket from Walter and a three from
Kathryn Echols to go back up by 12.
The Toppers would extend their lead even further with time running down, getting baskets from
Charnita Brooks,
Tenyzia Lathan and
Crystin Guy to finish off the Bulldogs.
Lindsey Murr would also have a solid game offensively, dropping 10 points for BMCU in the win. Carlson finished with eight points and seven boards, while Brooks chipped in eight also.
Ten different Lady Toppers scored in the victory, while the team outrebounded the Bulldogs 38-21. BMCU would also shoot 45 percent from the floor on the night, while Tougaloo shot 37 percent.
BMCU (1-0) returns to action Saturday, hosting Freed-Hardeman at Tyler Gym with tip set for 2 p.m. CT.
