No. 1 Dalton St. fends off Toppers

DALTON, Ga. – No. 1 Dalton State was able to shut out Blue Mountain here in a rare Wednesday SSAC matchup, defeating the Toppers 2-0.
The two defenses battled for most of the first half, with the Roadrunners finally breaking the deadlock with a penalty kick goal from Jip van den Essen at the 38:12 mark.
Dalton State would get its second goal at 64:45 on a score from Antonio Bittencourt on an assist from Pedro Nunes, giving the Roadrunners the sealing score.
The Dalton defense was just too much for the Toppers, as they would not allow a shot on goal in the match, with BMCU's Yushi Nagamatsu attempting the Toppers only shot.
Dalton would get off eight shots on goal, as Topper keeper Gabriel Ormeneze would notch four saves against the nation's top team.
Despite the loss, the Toppers have played extremely well over the last five matches, scoring 11 goals against its opponents and allowing nine goals.
At the moment, the Toppers are still locked in for a slot in the SSAC Championship Tournament, sitting in sixth place.
BMCU (2-6-4, 2-4-2 SSAC) returns Saturday for its final home match of the season, hosting Life University at 3 p.m. CT at Topper Pitch.
