TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In a big SSAC battle here Monday night, Stillman Men used a late 7-0 run to best Blue Mountain Christian 80-72.
The loss was Blue Mountain's fourth-straight single-digit setback in SSAC play.
The first half was a good one, as the teams went back and forth with
Darien Newchurch was hot for the Toppers. Newchurch would connect on three from deep to lead his team, but the Toppers would be down 35-23.
Midway through the second half, the Toppers went on a big run capped by two from deep by Jalen-Boyd Savage to take a 54-49 lead.
The Tigers would go on a seven-point run immediately after a timeout to take a 56-54 lead.
The tide would turn in Stillman's favor when Marcus Bates shoved down an alley-oop followed by a three from Jamar Jackson.
Keevin Etienne would record his sixth double-double of the season for Blue Mountain, collecting 11 points and 10 boards.
Trae Jones led the Toppers in scoring with 15 points, while Boyd-Savage and
Manny Patrick both chipped in 14 points. Newchurch would finish with 13 points.
Blue Mountain lived and died by the three, hitting 13-of-30 while Stillman hit 9-of-24.
Free throws were a hiccup for the Toppers again, as they managed only 9-of-16 from the charity stripe. Stillman was 11-for-12.
The Tigers would also win the rebounding game, besting Blue Mountain 41 to 31.
BMCU (8-12, 2-10 SSAC) finds itself on a five-game skid as they head to Mobile Thursday in SSAC action in Alabama with tip set for 7:30 p.m. CT.
