BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Blue Mountain Christian Women knocked off Life University here Saturday behind dual double-doubles from
Maddie Kirk and
Rebecca Walter in SSAC play.
The victory snapped a seven-game skid, giving the Lady Toppers their first conference win of the season.
Kirk would lead all scorers with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Walter had 12 points and 11 boards.
The two women came up big in the final period, with both hitting key free-throws and Kirk hitting a layup midway through.
"Our ladies really got after it today and found a way to win," BMCU head coach
Tracy Rice said. "Life has one of the best teams in the conference, so I am really thrilled with the victory."
The Lady Topper duo was joined in scoring by
Deja Pryor, who scored 10 points in the first half alone before going to the bench with an ankle injury. Pryor would hit three from deep in the first half.
In the fourth, Blue Mountain pulled away starting with a layup from
Crystin Guy, followed by a bucket from
Alexis Wynn to seal the win.
"I was really happy with how we went after every loose ball and our defensive effort," Rice said. "This is the basketball we know we can play, so hopefully this will get us on the right track."
Blue Mountain would hit 8-of-23 from deep and shoot 35 percent from the field, while forcing 12 Life turnovers.
The Topper bench showed up to match the strong Life squad with 17 points, while the team had 11 points off turnovers.
BMCU (4-14, 1-9 SSAC) returns to SSAC action Monday against Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala. with tip set for 5:30 p.m. CT.
