Women’s Soccer blanks Freed-Hardeman

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Blue Mountain Christian women blanked cross-state foe Freed-Hardeman 2-0 here Tuesday to pick up their first win of the 2023 season.
The teams were at a stalemate after the first 45 minutes, but the Toppers would hit the board in the second at the 48:45 mark on a header from Anna Comas off an assist from a corner kick by Madison Zamudio.
Blue Mountain struck again when Elsa Pelicant drilled the back of the net with a 25-footer off an assist from Flavie Sallaz.
Topper keeper Jordan Gates was credited with the victory and a clean sheet.  Gates had four saves while playing all 90 minutes between the sticks.
Blue Mountain's defense stifled the Lion offense, allowing only six shots and four shots on goal, while the Topper offense shot 18 times and 10 shots on goal at Freed keeper Brooke Latham.
"It was a great win for us today," BMCU head coach Lauren Lear said after the match.  "We didn't panic after the first half and came out looking to score.  We're very happy to get that first win under our belt."
BMCU (1-1-1) returns to action Friday as they travel to Belhaven (Miss.) with first kick set for 4 p.m. CT.
