NEW ORLEANS, La. – GAME 1 – Blue Mountain and No. 12 Loyola met up for an important SSAC series that began Friday with a doubleheader, as the Wolf Pack grabbed Game 1 by a score of 5-1.
The Toppers would get their lone run in the very first inning, a sac fly from
Austin Beech that scored
Reiley Tate.
Loyola would get a run in the first on a sac fly by Kason Cullins, followed by a solo homer from Cullins in the fourth against Blue Mountain's
Matthew Koch.
The Wolf Pack would get two more in the sixth highlighted by an RBI double from Anthony Fernandez.
Loyola ace and conference standout Stephen Still was almost unhittable, tossing a three-hit complete game, giving up a run with six Ks.
Koch (3-4) suffered the loss for the Toppers, throwing five innings, giving up five runs on seven hits with five Ks.
GAME 2
The Blue Mountain offense showed up in Game 2 in a slugfest, but Loyola would hold on to take a 12-10 victory, while also securing the series.
The Toppers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first, capped by RBI doubles from
Alex Frillman and
Austin Beech.
Loyola answered in the bottom of the frame against Topper starter
Taylor Sipes, with Cole Romero belting a two-run homer.
Romero would drive in another in the second with a single, followed by a three-run double from Kason Cullins in the second for Loyola.
Down 10-3, Blue Mountain started its comeback with a two-run homer from
Austin Beech in the sixth.
In the seventh,
Jacob Rousseau drove an RBI double to right center, followed by an RBI single from
Reiley Tate to make it 10-7.
Romero hit his second homer of the game in the seventh, but Beech answered with his second of the game in the eight for Blue Mountain, a solo shot, and his ninth of the season. Beech is now just three homers shy of the BMCU record of 12, held by Gardner Richey.
Easton Rainer would score on a passed ball and
David Dickerson hit a sac fly in the eighth to make it 11-10, but the comeback fell short for the Toppers.
Sipes (3-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toppers, going 2.2 innings, giving up nine runs on eight hits with three Ks.
Beech finished with three hits, four RBI and three runs scored, while Tate and
Wade Phyfer each had two hits for the Toppers.
BMCU (23-19, 6-14 SSAC) will try and salvage the series Saturday in Game 3, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. CT.
