BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Mobile Women barely escaped Blue Mountain Friday night in SSAC action, winning 74-68.
The Lady Toppers gave Mobile all they could handle, as
Charnita Brooks,
Isabella Carlson and
Maddie Kirk all put up double-figure scoring in the loss.
Brooks all scorers with 22 points, while Carlson had 15 and Kirk chipped in 14. It was Kirk's second straight double-figure scoring game.
The two teams went back and forth in the first half, but the second half was where the action played out.
Mobile carried a 59-46 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Lady Toppers found the dog inside and chipped away at the Rams' lead.
On three consecutive trips down the floor, Blue Mountain got threes from
Abigail Tatum, Carlson and Kirk to cut Mobile's lead to eight.
An acrobatic layup off the drive from Carlos on the next possession, followed by an And-1 from Kirk would make it a 67-62 game.
Rebecca Walter hit a jumper in the paint at 3:10 and Kirk drained two free-throws to make it 67-66, but Mobile Erica Jones would get a key free-throw late and Braylee McMath hit a jumper to stave off the upset.
"Our ladies really fought hard and played tough on every possession," BMCU head coach
Tracy Rice said. "Mobile is an exceptionally good team and we got after them, we just came up short. We're not dejected though because we are playing good basketball, and we believe it will lead to good things."
The loss snaps the Lady Toppers' two-game win streak as they hit the road this weekend.
BMCU (3-8, 0-3 SSAC) returns to SSAC action Saturday against UT-Southern in Pulaski, Tenn. with tip set for noon CT.
