MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Oakwood College picked up a 56-53 win over Blue Mountain Christian Women here Monday.
The upset victory for the Ambassadors saw Nekaya Williams score 16 points against Blue Mountain, with Nariah Alexander chipping in 11.
The loss spoiled a nice game from
Rebecca Walter who would score 17 points on the Oakwood defense, while also pulling down nine rebounds.
The Toppers opened up hot in the first quarter, jumping out to an 18-10 lead with
Abigail Tatum hitting consecutive threes to give BMCU a 6-0 lead.
Walter would hit a pair of free throws and a jumper also in the first.
The Blue Mountain offense began to sputter in the second quarter, as Oakwood heated up and took a 29-28 lead into the break.
The Blue Mountain defense held strong in the third, allowing only nine points in the quarter and
Deja Pryor drained a three and Walter scored under the bucket.
The fourth told the story, as the Toppers missed seven attempts from three, including a possible game-tying shot from
Charnita Brooks.
Pryor would hit double figures for the first time this season for Blue Mountain, chipping in 11 points.
The Toppers struggled from deep shooting 5-for-18, but 15 turnovers by Blue Mountain supported the loss.
The Toppers did once again lead the rebounding side, pulling down 44 to Oakwood's 42.
