BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Blue Mountain Christian Women's Basketball grabbed a home-opening victory Saturday over Tougaloo 65-62.
After being down 30-25 at the half, the Lady Toppers turned up the heat on the Bulldogs by putting up 40 in the second half.
Crystin Guy would lead all scorers, dropping 21 points on the Bulldogs, while
Charnita Brooks was right behind her with 19. Both ladies just missed double-doubles, as both would have eight rebounds each.
The sparkplug for Blue Mountain came in the form of
Genise Dabbs who would pull down 12 rebounds in the victory.
"Our ladies did a great job on the boards today," BMCU head coach
Tracy Rice said. "We put ourselves in good position each time the ball came off the goal."
Blue Mountain would outrebound the much bigger Tougaloo team by a margin of 44-31.
The turning point came in the third quarter when the Toppers stormed back from a seven-point deficit as Brooks got going from the outside.
Freshman
Abigail Tatum started the ball rolling with a three at 5:28 and Brooks gave BMCU the lead at 3:36 to make it 38-36 Blue Mountain.
Guy would ice the game for the Toppers with just three seconds left, draining two free throws.
"We had great intensity today and a good crowd on hand to see these ladies," Rice said. "Tougaloo has a strong team so we're very happy to get this win at home."
BMCU (1-1) returns to action Monday against Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala. with tip set for 5:30 p.m. CT.
