MARIETTA, Ga. – What was billed as the SSAC Game of the Week turned into a big time win for (RV) Blue Mountain Christian, as they would hand Life its first conference defeat on the season by ousting the Running Eagles 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 25-8).
It was the 12
th straight win for the Volley Toppers, along with the 29
th straight SSAC victory for
Reid Gann's bunch, as they remained a perfect 8-0 in conference and sitting alone in the top spot.
After winning the first set Life would lead for the majority of the second, but the Toppers battled back late in the set with a kill from
Reanna Brown, a hitting error by Life's Fayola Louis and a kill by
Olivia Ashton, giving BMCU the set.
The Eagles would take the third set 25-19, which in turn irritated the Toppers, leading BMCU to run away with the fourth set 25-8.
"This was a very big win for us today," Gann said. "We knew coming in we would be tested, and we did a great job of playing at a high level. I think dropping that third set woke us up for the fourth, and I'm proud of how we fought to finish."
The victory now gives Gann his 97
th of his career at BMCU.
BMCU's hitters stole the show, as three Toppers hit double digits in kills. Ashton and
Kaytie Rutland would lead the way with 15 bombs apiece, while
Gigi Sasso collected another double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs.
Michaela Frederick dished out 24 assists and Brown had 18 in the 6-2, while
Kerianna Collins had three aces and
Jaiyah Jackson had two. Jackson also had 15 digs on defense.
A'Dasia Porter and
Randi Crandall both had two assisted blocks and a solo for the Toppers on defense, while Ashton had two assisted.
