New Orleans, La.- Blue Mountain Christian volleyball closed out its New Orleans road trip Saturday afternoon, falling to Xavier (La.) in three sets at the Convocation Center.
The Volley Toppers battled the Gold Nuggets throughout the match before Xavier took the contest 25-18, 25-17, 25-22.
Xavier opened the match by taking the first set 25-18 before BMCU looked to answer in the second. The Toppers recorded eight kills in the frame, but the Gold Nuggets maintained their advantage to take the set 25-17 and move ahead 2-0.
BMCU put together its strongest push of the afternoon in the third.
The Toppers recorded a match-high 10 kills in the set and stayed within striking distance throughout the frame.
Xavier was able to hold off the late push, however, taking the set 25-22 to close the match.
Marissa Gerleman led the BMCU attack with eight kills, while
Salice Speed added six kills and two service aces.
Mattie Hopper contributed three blocks at the net, and Gerleman added two.
Sydney Tague handed out a team-high 12 assists, while
Brenyn Wilbanks finished with eight. Defensively,
Abbi Williams led the Toppers with 14 digs, while Speed added five.
BMCU finished the match with 27 kills, eight service aces, four blocks and 32 digs.
The Volley Toppers return home Friday to continue SSAC play against William Carey.
