Montgomery, Ala.- Blue Mountain Christian volleyball junior libero Abbi Williams has been named the SSAC Defender of the Week following an impressive opening weekend at the Carolina Classic, the conference announced Monday.
Williams, a native of Wetumpka, Alabama, anchored the Volley Toppers defense throughout the three-match tournament hosted by Carolina University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Williams totaled 67 digs across 11 sets, averaging an impressive 6.09 digs per set during the opening weekend.
Williams' defensive effort helped the Volley Toppers finish the Carolina Classic with a 2-1 record, with both victories coming in straight-set sweeps.
"Abbi was a huge part of our success this weekend," BMCU head coach Sara Eason said. "She was consistent, aggressive and gave us a steady presence defensively in every match. Her ability to read the game and keep plays alive gave our offense opportunities to stay in rhythm. I'm proud to see her hard work recognized with this honor."
The weekly honor is the first of the season for Williams and the Volley Toppers.
