Blue Mountain, Miss- The Blue Mountain Christian University baseball team opened its SSAC home series against the UT Southern Firehawks Friday, falling 8-3 in 10 innings after the Firehawks pulled away with a five-run top of the 10th inning.
The Toppers showed resilience throughout the game, battling back from an early deficit and forcing extra innings before UT Southern broke the tie late.
UT Southern took a 3-0 lead early before Blue Mountain answered in the fifth inning.
The Toppers plated a run to cut the deficit to 3-1 and continued to chip away before eventually tying the game to force extra innings.
The Firehawks capitalized in the 10th inning, scoring five runs to secure the series opening victory.
Blue Mountain collected eight hits in the contest.
Yaidel Perez led the Toppers offensively, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.
Jake Meilstrup added a hit, scored a run, walked once, and stole a base.
Jarrett Morris,
Trace Roy, and
Hugh Parsons each drove in a run for the Toppers.
Jacob Bryant,
Cody Presley, and Morris each added a hit as part of the offensive effort.
On the mound,
Chip Harris got the start and threw five innings, allowing three runs while striking out four.
Christian Maness provided solid relief work, throwing 4.1 innings with four strikeouts.
Jesse Hancock also saw action out of the bullpen.
Blue Mountain will look to bounce back as the Toppers continue their SSAC series against UT Southern.
