Lawrenceville, Ga.- The Toppers traveled to play the second ranked team in the country, Georgia Gwinnett College, in a nonconference showdown this weekend.
In game one on Friday night,
Cameron Gordon, JC Giordano, and
Rey Castaneda pitched on the mound for BMCU.
The Toppers scored seven in runs in game one.
Chris Smith and
Jacob Bryant both earned a couple of rbi's off some stout pitching for the Grizzlies.
Hayden Redding went 2-4 with a triple and a stolen base, while
Austin Garrison went 2-4 with a couple of base hits.
As the Toppers would chip away at the Grizzlies lead, the Grizzlies found a way to respond. They went on to take game one of the series, 14-7.
In game two,
Benji Webb started on the mound and went the entirety of the game for BMCU.
Webb gave up five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts which is impressive against a highly regarded offensive team like Georgia Gwinnett.
The Grizzlies got out to an early 5-0 lead through the first four innings, but the Toppers rallied back in the sixth and seventh innings.
In the sixth inning, BMCU scored two runs off an error that scored
Hayden Redding and a rbi walk to score
Jacob Bryant.
In the seventh,
Ross Polizzi came up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. He hit a bases clearing double to right field to tie the game at 5-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, Georgia Gwinnett hit a walk off homerun to win game two and take the series.
In game three, BMCU had an 8-6 lead through 5 and a half innings of play, off a triple hit by Redding that scored Ty Roberson and
Braxton Miller.
The Grizzlies rallied to take the lead in the sixth and seventh inning to make the score 13-8.
Smith hit a rbi double down the right field line to score Roberson in the eighth.
Polizzi followed him up with a rbi double as well down the left field line, scoring
Silas McKinney.
The Grizzlies were able to add some insurance runs late and take game three, 17-10.
Polizzi had a fantastic weekend, batting .555 with 6 RBI's and a homerun.
The Toppers will be back on the diamond next Tuesday in a nine-inning game in McKenzie, Tennessee versus Bethel.
