MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The historic season for Blue Mountain Christian Women's Basketball will continue, as the Lady Toppers won their first-ever SSAC Championship here Saturday, defeating the University of Mobile 62-53.
A 20-9 run until the final buzzer was the damage done to win their first-ever title across any conference and make its first appearance in the NAIA National Tournament in the modern era.
Mobile would come out hitting on all cylinders, including taking 10-point leads throughout the game.
It was the fourth quarter that saw the Lady Toppers turn it on to finish off the Rams. After scoring only 19 points in the first half, four BMCU players would reach double figures in scoring with
Charnita Brooks leading the way with 15 points and six rebounds.
After trailing the entire game, Blue Mountain got its first lead in the fourth quarter on a triple from
Kathryn Echols.
After back-and-forth buckets, a three from Brooks would essentially be the nail in the coffin.
Blue Mountain would finish off the title tilt with an 8-0 run, and mop up with four free-throws from Brooks and
Crystin Guy.
Isabella Carlson was stellar for Blue Mountain, as she scored 15 points, including Blue Mountain's first nine points on threes.
Guy would finish an unbelievable tournament with 11 points, scoring in double figures in all four games and dropping 77 total for the championship.
Maddie Kirk would score 10 in the win also, while
McKenzie Williams had seven points with 11 rebounds and Echols chipped in five.
"We believed even when things weren't going well today," BMCU head coach
Tracy Rice said. "We trusted the process and kept grinding away. I am so proud of the toughness this team has shown. This proves what a group of young ladies can accomplish when they put the team first and play to honor God. I am so thankful."
BMCU will now await an opponent and location for the NAIA National Championship Opening Round, to be announced Thursday, March 6 at 6 p.m. on the NAIA Network.
