Toppers push William Carey to overtime in gritty comeback effort

Blue Mountain, Miss.- Blue Mountain Christian delivered its most resilient performance of the season on Saturday afternoon, storming back from multiple double-digit deficits to defeat William Carey 81–89 in an overtime thriller inside Tyler Gym.
William Carey came out firing, using hot shooting from deep to build early separation.
The Crusaders led by as many as 16 in the first half, capitalizing on turnovers and quick transition baskets to take a 42–34 lead into halftime.
But even in the early struggles, the Toppers found sparks—RJ Robinson poured in 16 first-half points, and Gavin Shannon's work on the glass kept possessions alive as BMCU fought to stay within reach.
The game shifted dramatically after the break. The Toppers put together their most complete quarter of the afternoon, erupting for 44 second-half points behind efficient offense and a much tighter defensive presence.
Michael Hill was relentless during the run, scoring all 19 of his points in the second frame as he attacked the paint and got downhill, while Robinson continued to provide timely buckets, finishing with a game-high 21 points, six rebounds, and a perfect 5-for-5 showing from the foul line.
With the crowd behind them, BMCU chipped away possession by possession.
Shannon battled for tough rebounds and turned strong interior play into 17 points and 12 rebounds, securing yet another double-double. Kam Carter knocked down big shots from beyond the arc, recording 10 points, and Chris Tackett added 8 points and 5 boards while giving the Toppers physicality inside.
The final minutes of regulation featured clutch moments from both sides. William Carey's Malik Franklin kept the Crusaders in front with timely shooting, but the Toppers answered at every turn.
Hill tied the game with under a minute left, and BMCU's defense held strong on the final WCU possession, sending the contest into overtime knotted at 78–78. In the extra period, however, William Carey regained control.
The Crusaders capitalized on turnovers and hit key baskets while holding the Toppers to just three overtime points.
Despite BMCU's determination and energy, WCU executed late to secure the win.
The Toppers finished with 41 rebounds, 42 points in the paint, and an 81% mark at the free-throw line, showing toughness and growth despite the final score.
Blue Mountain Christian will return to action Thursday in an exhibition matchup against NCAA Division II Union University.
