Toppers power way to playoff spot with series win over UT-Southern

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – GAME 3 – Blue Mountain Christian secured the No. 8 seed in next week's SSAC Championship by defeating UT-Southern here Saturday 11-8 in the final game of the series.
It was high stakes, as the winner of the matchup moved on to the postseason while the loser stayed home.
BMCU's Hayden Redding made sure his team moved forward, as he put on an overall spectacular performance in the victory.
The Toppers scored three in the opening frame, thanks to an RB double by Will Crawford and an RBI single by Arderrius "Peeko" Townsend.
The Firehawks answered against BMCU starter Jackson Siler in the second on a three-run homer by Cole Barnett and a sac-fly by Rhett Birdsong to take a 4-3 lead.
Blue Mountain fired back in the third with a pair of homers; a solo shot by Redding and a two-run homer by Townsend, his 24th of the season, giving the Toppers a 6-5 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Redding would lead off the inning by teeing off on his second solo homer of the day to center making it 7-5 Toppers.
Chris Smith would give the Toppers another long ball, blasting a solo shot to left in the sixth but the Firehawks would eventually tie it 8-8 in the eighth on a two-run homer by Kevin McCarthy.
In the ninth, the Toppers got an RBI double down the left field line, Redding bunted in a run and Garrison scored on a wild pitch, sending the Toppers to the SSAC Championship next week as the No. 8 seed.
One day after winning Game 1, ace Matthew Koch (2) would come on to close the doors for the save for the Toppers.
Jesse Hancock (5-1) grabbed the win in relief for BMCU, tossing a solid 4.2 inning, allowing two earned runs on just four hits.
Redding finished with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored, while Townsend had two hits, three RBI and two runs scored also.  Smith also chipped in a pair of hits for the Toppers.
The Toppers close out the regular season 29-19 overall and 13-17 in the SSAC.  The next stop is Wednesday, May 1 at the SSAC Championship at Rockabilly's Stadium in Jackson, Tenn. against No. 1 seed Faulkner.
