BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – Tad Sivley grabbed an offensive rebound and stuck it back in the goal to with .5 seconds left in the game to give No. 7 UT-Southern a 53-51 victory over Blue Mountain here Saturday on the Toppers' Senior Day.
It was the final game of the regular season for both teams, as the Firehawks wrapped up the No. 1 spot in the SSAC and left Blue Mountain at home, narrowly missing next week's SSAC Championship Tournament in Montgomery, Ala.
It looked like it would be all Blue Mountain early, as the Toppers would pull out to a 13-point lead in the first half.
The Firehawks would fire back, led by star Adarion Hudson. Hudson needed 29 points to eclipse the 2,000-point mark heading into the game. He finished with 20.
The Toppers would control almost the entire second half but would go on a cold streak with less than six minutes left to go in the game. Both teams would go scoreless in the final six minutes.
After a missed free-throw by
Vincent Douglas, the Firehawks would get the final shot off, with Hudson driving the lane at seven seconds. He would fire us a missed shot, but Sively was there for the offensive board and put-back to avoid the upset.
Keevin Etienne led Blue Mountain with 13 points and seven rebounds, while
Trae Jones had 12 and
Darien Newchurch chipped in 10.
The Toppers were without starting guard
Manny Patrick due to injury.
BMC finishes the season 12-16 overall and 6-14 in SSAC play.
