MONTGOMERY, Ala. – (GAME 1, POOL B) Blue Mountain Christian began the defense of its SSAC Tournament Championship title here Thursday, walloping No. 6 seed Faulkner 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-21) in the opener.
Recently minted First-Team All-Conference star
Rae Ann Hall destroyed the Eagle defense with 16 kills at a .250 clip, while also notching eight digs, two short of a double-double.
Peyton Kidd led in assists with 22 and
Hailey Oliver had 14 in the 6-2 set.
First-Team All-Conference libero
Kora Wilson led on defense with 23 digs, while
Kerianna Collins had 15 to boot and
Jaiyah Jackson added 14.
Olivia Ashton held the line for BMCU at the net, stuffing four Faulkner attempts with three assisted blocks with a solo.
As a team, the Volley Toppers would hit .217 and hold the Eagles to just .038. Jackson and Wilson would also slap two service aces each in the victory for Blue Mountain.
GAME 2, POOL B
Blue Mountain and No. 3 seed William Carey squared off for the third time this season, with both holding a win over the other.
The south Mississippi team would get the better of the North in the nightcap in pool play, defeating the Toppers 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 26-24).
The Volley Toppers had a hard time getting off the blocks, as super freshman Suelen Lima went to work for Carey on the offense.
Lima would finish with 16 kills to lead all payers, while
Rae Ann Hall did her part for the Toppers by drilling 10 kills.
Both teams looked good defensively, as
Sammie Smith had four blocks for BMCU and Elaina Anderson had six for Carey.
A'Dasia Porter would have three blocks for the Toppers, also.
Kora Wilson would have 11 digs in the loss, while
Jaiyah Jackson chipped in 10.
Hailey Oliver had 13 assists and
Peyton Kidd dished out 12 in the 6-2 rotation. Kidd also had Blue Mountain's two service aces in the match.
Pool play continues Friday for the Toppers, as they will next play No. 7 seed Life at 11 a.m. CT. A win for the Toppers would send them to the semifinals slated for 5:30 p.m. CT Friday.
