BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – (
Box Score) Blue Mountain Christian men opened its 2023 campaign Sunday with a shutout of in-state foe and NCAA DIII member Mississippi University for Women, winning 3-0.
The game was broken into three thirty-minutes periods due to the extreme heat occurring in North Mississippi, as the heat index was over 100 degrees.
After a nil first period, Blue Mountain broke the scoring hiatus with a goal by
Jose Merchan off an assist from
Jasper Hofland to make it 1-0.
The Toppers would get another goal just a few minutes later by
Blake Elliott off an assist from
Antonio Gutierrez, giving them the 2-0 lead.
Blue Mountain's final goal came at 80:42 in the third on a goal from Hofland, assisted by
Eneko Casas.
The Topper keeper Jesus Calvao was credited with the clean sheet, notching two saves against two shots on goal.
"The guys played really well today despite the heat," BMCU head coach Micheal Azira said. "I was very pleased with our aggressiveness and how we adapted to them. We're looking forward to a great season."
BMCU (1-0) returns to action Thursday against Georgetown College (Ky.) in Georgtown at 3 p.m. CT.
