DECATUR, Ala. – No. 3 seed William Carey would hold on to get a win over No. 6 seed Blue Mountain Thursday in the opening round of the SSAC Championship, winning 3-2.
The Crusaders jumped on the board with all three runs in the second against BMCU starter
Jacy Weaver, capped by an RBI double from Carley Kidder.
Harley Mullins would relieve Weaver in the second and shut down the Carey offense the rest of the way, allowing no runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
Blue Mountain rallied against Carey ace Haley Nations in the final inning, with
Sam Whitwell and
Skylar Lee scoring on an infield single by
Mallory Jo Mitchell.
Nations would hold on for the Crusaders in the circle, as she induced a ground ball by
Jadyn Yarbro to end the game.
Nations would toss a complete game in the win for Carey, while Weaver suffered the loss for Blue Mountain, going 1.2 innings, giving up three runs on six hits.
The Toppers now enter the loser's bracket and will play the loser of No. 2 seed Middle Georgia State and No. 7 seed Brewton-Parker Friday at 10 a.m. in Decatur.
