HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A night after downing top-seeded William Carey at the SSAC Championship in the opening round, Blue Mountain Christian was rudely greeted to the second round by No. 5 seed Loyola in a 14-2 loss.
Loyola would force Blue Mountain to go to the bullpen five times on the night in the run-rule shortened affair.
BMCU starter
Will Long was chewing through the Loyola offense, and his team scored a pair of runs in the first two innings; one in the first on an error and another in the second on a sac fly to left by
Chris Hoing to take a 2-0 lead.
Long left after the fourth with arm tightness, making room for three Topper relievers in the fifth;
Taylor Sipes,
Caleb Bass and
Jesse Hancock.
Things went completely off the rails for the Toppers following that, as Loyola would score 14 runs in the next two innings.
Loyola would get five runs in the fifth capped by a two-run homer from Aaron Davis and an RBI triple by Cole Romero.
In the sixth, nine runs would cross the plate for the Wolf Pack aided by three Topper errors and a two-run single by Brandon Mooney.
Sipes would suffer the loss for BMCU, giving up three runs on three hits.
The Toppers now face a rematch against William Carey in the elimination game Friday at noon in Hattiesburg. Game time could possibly move up due to expected rain later in the afternoon.
