BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – It took all nine innings, but (RV) Freed-Hardeman held on to take a 14-13 non-conference victory over Blue Mountain Tuesday.
The Lions scored four runs in the first against Topper starter
Peyton Smith, highlighted by an RBI double Camden Madding and a Blue Mountain error.
Alex Frillman answered for the Toppers in the third with a two-run bomb to left to make it 5-2 Freed.
The Lion offense would score eight runs in the fourth, with Will McCall jacking two homers in the inning; a solo shot and a three-run blast to give his team a 13-2 lead.
Blue Mountain fired back in the bottom half of the inning, getting four runs aided by three home runs from
Zack Koon, Frillman and
Austin Beech. Frillman's was a two-run job in the frame to make it 13-6, as the Toppers chased Freed starter Cam Jennings.
Frillman's jacks were number six and seven of the season, while Beech's was number 10.
The Toppers would get another in the fifth on an RBI single to center by
Gavin Coles.
Koon got the Toppers a run closer in the bottom of the seventh with his second homer of the day, a solo blast to left field, his third of the year.
Blue Mountain would get five runs in the eighth to tie it at 13-13, as Frillman doubled in a run, Beech singled in a run and
Josh Smith roped a two-run double down the left field line.
The Lions would get the game-securing run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Madding.
Beech finished with four hits and Frillman had three with five RBI. Coles,
Easton Rainer and Koon all had two hits apiece for BMCU.
Caleb Bass (0-2) suffered the loss for the Toppers in relief, throwing 5.1 innings, giving up a run on three hits with five Ks in a solid appearance.
BMCU (23-21, 6-15 SSAC) returns to action in its final SSAC series of the season Friday and Saturday at home, hosting in-state foe William Carey.
