Topper Softball drops twin conference bill to Faulkner

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – GAME 1 – Blue Mountain and Faulkner met Thursday in an SSAC doubleheader, with the Eagles taking Game 1 by a score of 5-1.
Blue Mountain's Jacy Weaver and Faulkner's Katelynn Inness battled for most of the game, with Inness eventually getting the win in the circle for her team.
The Eagles broke the stalemate in the fifth when Colby Adams doubled in two off Weaver, making it 2-0.
Faulkner would get two more in the sixth on an RBI single by Erika Mitchell and a solo homer from Ivey Hill.
The Toppers hit the board in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk by Tyra Yahola but couldn't get any more, giving Faulkner the SSAC victory.
Weaver suffered the pitching loss for BMCU, tossing 5.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits with six Ks.
Inness tossed a complete game, giving up a run on five hits with eight strikeouts.

GAME 2
Blue Mountain carried a 4-2 lead into the sixth inning in the nightcap, but Faulkner would get four runs in the bottom of the sixth to sweep the day, winning 6-4.
Blue Mountain held a 2-0 lead after the top of the fifth, thanks to an RBI by Destiny Dill and an RBI double by Mallory Jo Mitchell earlier.
Dill slapped home another with an RBI single in the sixth, and before that, Tyra Yahola singled in a run for the Toppers.
The Faulkner damage was done in the sixth on a two-run single by Anna Purvis and a two-run single up the middle by Erika Mitchell to give them the victory.
Harley Mullins (5-3) was saddled with the pitching loss for BMCU, tossing a complete game, giving up five earned runs on 12 hits with four Ks.
Faulkner's Katelynn Inness got her second win of the day, this time in relief, tossing 1.2 innings with two Ks.
Dill and Sam Whitwell both led the Toppers with two hits apiece, while Skylar Lee had two stolen bases.
BMCU (9-11, 2-4 SSAC) was scheduled to play Talladega Saturday, but the Alabama team has forfeited the rest of their 2023 schedule due to dwindling roster size.  Therefore, the Toppers will be 11-11 overall and 4-4 in the SSAC after Saturday.  Next up for the Toppers, as they try and snap a six-game losing streak, will be a doubleheader March 24 against SSAC foe and No. 1 nationally ranked Mobile March 24 at 2 and 4 p.m. CT.
