LEBANON, Tenn. – Blue Mountain Christian Women couldn't buy a shot here Friday night against Cumberland, as they dropped the 2023-24 opener 59-46.
The Lady Toppers found themselves down early, as the Phoenix would put up 21 points in the first quarter and Blue Mountain scraped together seven.
BMCU would stage a nice comeback in the second as
Crystin Guy would make a layup early and
Abigail Tatum drained a three.
The threes continued to go down for the Toppers headed into the half, as
Isabella Carlson and Baily Gillies both nailed shots behind the arc. Cumberland would have a 32-24 lead at the break.
Blue Mountain would continue to cut into the Cumberland lead in the third, eventually making it 41-37, but the Toppers went cold in the fourth.
Guy led the way for Blue Mountain scoring 19, while
Rebecca Walter and Gillies both had six apiece.
Lindsey Freeman led Cumberland with 16 points and Kayla Gordon followed with 15.
The Toppers would eventually shoot less than 30 percent from the field on the night, and Cumberland would shoot 40 percent.
BMCU head coach
Tracy Rice said after the game, "Overall, we played well but we just could get the shots to fall tonight. "We'll be back and continue building and improving."
BMCU returns to action Monday in exhibition against NCAA DI UT-Martin in Martin, Tenn. with tip set for 6 p.m. CT.
